Acne Medications: Choosing the Best Treatment for You

Every person’s skin is different and each case of acne is different as well. Unfortunately what this really means is there is not any one, single treatment to cure any given case of acne. Generally doctors have to resort to experimentation or ‘trial and error’ methods to find the right products or combination of products for each individual they treat. This can be very frustrating for the acne sufferer. There simply are no quick-fix solutions to the dilemma of acne. There are, at least, some absolutes about what not to do when dealing with acne. For example: skin affected by acne should never be scrubbed. Scrubbing only prolongs the healing process because it inflames and irritates the acne even more causing more pimples. Also, never attempt to self-treat acne. Many over the counter acne medications can cause severe reactions in some people. Benzoyl peroxide for example should only be used in small amounts. Not only has prolonged use or overuse been proven to lead to premature aging of the skin, but many people experience allergic reactions to it. Let a well experienced dermatologist draw upon their professional experience when choosing which medications should be tried on your face first.

There are many products available to combat acne: Antibiotics are effective at unplugging pores and killing bacteria. Accutane dries up oils produced by the sebaceous glands of the skin. Oral contraceptives are effective at altering the hormones that stimulate the sebaceous glands. Most of the time any one of these prescribed medications works only in combination with over the counter remedies. If topical creams alone prove ineffective, doctors will usually combine them with an oral antibiotic. Acne doesn’t clear up overnight even in the best of cases so be patient. In fact even when an effective treatment is found, your skin will usually get worse before it gets better. Most doctors will let a treatment continue at least four to six weeks before making a determination about whether of not it is working for you. Be patient and do not be disappointed if the first treatment that you try does not work. Expect to try several different treatments before finally finding what works for you.

What is Acne Vulgaris?

It is assumed by most of our society that everyone fully understands exactly what acne is. But as with any term that is thrown around so much in casual conversation, over time you will have some people who missed out on the actual definition. For these people, it takes real motivation to find some understanding soul to convey a good definition of the term acne. I hope this article conveys that definition simply and concisely to anyone seeking to understand acne.

Acne Vulgaris is the scientific name for acne. Acne is a fairly under-studied disease despite having been around since the beginning of man. To this day doctors have been unable to find one single treatment to resolve all cases of acne and so there is a lot of trial and error involved in the treatment of this condition. Patients are asked to try one treatment after another until they find the solution that will work for them. The fact that the skin takes a long time to show improvements even when a particular treatment is working only adds to the frustration an acne sufferer goes through. Take heart though; there are indeed effective treatments for all acne including the most severe cases. It just takes time.

That’s enough of what is not known about acne; here is what is known about the condition of acne:

The cause of acne is not complicated. It is caused by blocked skin pores. Oil and dead skin layers are what blocks the pores. Androgen hormones cause the sebaceous glands to produce too much oil, then excessive skin oils and bacteria are trapped below the surface of the skin. The area becomes inflamed and the mixture begins to leak into surrounding skin. The resulting build up causes redness, swelling and pus; in other words, a pimple (either a whitehead or a blackhead) as seen on the surface of the skin.

Because it does take to time for any effective treatment to become visible it is best to seek treatment for acne sooner rather than later. Also, acne is a progressive condition; meaning it is a condition that will move from mild to moderate to severe if treatment is not sought early on. Most everyone gets acne at some point in their lives. In fact, the statistics are that 85% of people in any given place have suffered from acne at some time usually during the teenage years. Women tend to fight acne well into their 40’s or 50’s as a result of menstrual cycles and hormonal changes.

When men develop acne it is usually induced by stress. Severe acne can, and often does, cause permanent scarring of the skin. It is far better to seek medical treatment for acne before it reaches the stage of being severe to enable a better chance of fully recovering unscathed. If you are currently suffering from acne, the most important decision that you can make is the decision to seek treatment and to halt the progression of the skin disease.
